Writers ought to be the first readers of the literary magazines they publish their work in.
For this reason, Island publishes the work of subscribers, both old and new.
If you are not already a subscriber, then you can still submit work for our consideration. However, if your work is published, then your contributor's fee package will include the cost of an annual subscription.
For a small literary magazine, this is a necessary step in a long-term strategy to build circulation. This, in turn, will allow us to increase the amount we can afford to pay our writers.
For more information on our contributor fee policy, see here.
Island accepts submissions of poetry and short fiction, as well as essays. For poetry, please only submit a selection of up to three poems. For short fiction, please only submit one piece at a time.
For essays, please do not send a complete essay; instead, send a brief overview of the essay you are proposing, as well as a brief description of why you think this piece is suitable for Island.
Please include with your submission a brief bio note.
