Update
The future of Island remains very uncertain.
Following our unsuccessful application for multi-year funding in the most recent round, at the invitation of Arts Tasmania we have met to identify options for the magazine. These discussions are ongoing, but Arts Tasmania has ruled out the provision of an ad hoc grant.
Our short-term objective is to raise sufficient funds for a publishing schedule in 2020, during which we will reapply to Arts Tasmania in the next funding cycle (for 2021 and beyond). In the meantime, we await the outcome of a submission to the Australia Council, the success of which would help underwrite the publication of two issues of Island next year; and we continue to actively pursue other prospects.
Recently, the Island team felt buoyed by the generous contribution of an anonymous donor, which has strengthened our capacity to work through this very challenging period. Although generous, that donation is not sufficient for us to commit to a publishing schedule for 2020.
We deeply appreciate the goodwill and encouragement extended to us by Island’s community. If you’d like to support us, please purchase our current issue (158) or consider making a tax-deductible donation via our website. There are other ways in which you can help, so please get in touch if you would like to extend a hand.
Island’s staff and board remain deeply committed to the future of what is Tasmania’s longstanding premier literary publication and a valued and respected component of the national literary ecology – and we don’t give up easily.
